Less than a week after being designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs, outfielder Alexander Canario has a new home.

According to MLB reporter Jesse Rogers , the Cubs and New York Mets agreed to a deal that will send Canario to New York in exchange for cash considerations. Canario, 24, made his MLB debut in 2023 with Chicago but has appeared in just 21 career games.

He showed a bit of promise and potential in limited action, posting a career average of .286 and an OPS of .857 with two home runs in just 46 at-bats. He also spent time in all three outfield positions during his short stint with the Cubs.

Canario became the odd man out in a crowded Cubs outfield heading into 2025 after the acquisition of former Astros superstar Kyle Tucker. He will now get a fresh opportunity with a Mets team looking to return to the postseason in back-to-back seasons.

It is difficult to see where Canario will fit on a Mets roster that currently includes backup outfielders such as Starling Marte and Tyrone Taylor. However, getting to camp and having an impressive spring will be extremely important for Canario.
