David Beckles ranks as Blue Jays Nation’s 43rd-best prospect in 2025 mid-season update
© Nathan Ray Seebeck - USA Today

David Beckles has had a breakout season with the Florida Complex League Blue Jays this season.

This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.

Beckles’ pathway to ranking on our list is unlike any other since I started doing these lists in early 2022. If you missed the 44th-best Blue Jays’ prospect, you can read about Tucker Toman here.

Getting to know David Beckles…

Position: First base

Bats: Right

Born: April 23, 2004

Acquired: Minor-League contract

Previous ranking: Unranked

Beckles, 21, signed with the New York Yankees in early November 2021. He made his debut as an 18-year-old in the Dominican Summer League, slashing .276/.388/.397 with five home runs in 209 plate appearances for a 112 wRC+. He had an even better 2019 season, slashing .267/.451/.400 with two home runs in 144 plate appearances, with a higher BB% (22.2%) than K% (19.4%) for a 124 wRC+.

The 6’3″ first baseman only received four plate appearances with the Yankees’ DSL team in 2024 before being released on June 16. The Blue Jays signed Beckles 11 days later, and he slashed .202/.343/.281 with a home run in 108 plate appearances in the DSL to finish the year.

So, entering the 2025 season, Beckles appeared to be minor league depth, but then his Florida Complex League season happened. In 237 plate appearances, Beckles slashed .304/.388/.483 with eight home runs, with a 10.1 BB% and 26.6 K% for a 144 wRC+.

As you know, the FCL Blue Jays went on to win the FCL championship, and Beckles was a big reason for that. For any player with more than 30 plate appearances for the FCL Jays, his 144 wRC+ was the best. He also led the team in home runs, batting average, and was second in doubles.

Beckles was one of a handful of players (as well as Yorman Licourt) who earned a promotion to Single-A Dunedin after the FCL season concluded. In 40 plate appearances with the Dunedin Blue Jays, he’s slashing .206/.325/.265 with no home runs and two doubles. So far, he’s done a good job of avoiding chasing pitches out of the zone, but hasn’t hit the ball hard by any means.

Time will tell what kind of prospect Beckles is, but a strong performance in FCL to help them win a championship is worthy of a spot on this list.
