The Detroit Tigers will play the third game of their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers took the first game on Monday 13-1 before dropping the second game 8-1. Ahead of the third game tonight the Tigers are activating right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long. To make room for Gipson-Long the Tigers are optioning right-handed pitcher Dylan Smith to Triple-A Toledo. They also recalled reliever Jason Foley and placed him on the 60-day injured list. Gipson-Long has made five rehab starts posting a 2.20 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. In his last start at Triple-A Toledo, he went 5.1 innings, giving up one run on a hit. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out five. Smith appeared in one game with the Tigers which was his first big league game. He went two shutout innings, giving up one hit. Smith walked one and didn’t record a strikeout. This season in 14 games is 1-1 with a 1.61 ERA, a 0.76 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

Gipson-Long hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2023 when he made four starts. He went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 20 innings. He did make one start at Single-A Lakeland last season. In that start he went three innings, giving up a run on three hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out four.
Smith is 14 games with 13 of those coming as starts last season went 0-5. He posted a 4.40 ERA, a 1.55 WHIP, and 59 strikeouts in 57.1 innings. In four minor league seasons with the Tigers he’s made 62 appearances with 45 of those coming as starts. Smith is 10-14 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and 218 strikeouts in 205.1 innings.
