The Detroit Tigers made a big investment during the offseason to strengthen their position as a postseason contender for the 2026 campaign. They retained Tarik Skubal to a record-breaking $32 million arbitration deal for his final year of club control. But the Tigers are in freefall ever since Skubal landed on the IL this month.
On Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers suffered another big blow to their starting rotation with Casey Mize making an early exit from his start against the Los Angeles Angels. But the Tigers received some positive news on the offensive end. Cody Stanvenhagen of The Athletic reported Gleyber Torres and Kerry Carpenter will join Triple-A Toledo for their rehab assignments this weekend.
“Kerry Carpenter and Gleyber Torres are going to Toledo tomorrow. Carpenter is expected to play on rehab assignment. Torres won’t play immediately but could by the end of the weekend,” Stavenhagen stated.
Kerry Carpenter will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Friday, likely starting in RF. Gleyber Torres will also be in Toledo to work out, but won't be ready for rehab assignment right away, possibly this weekend.

Detroit placed Torres on the IL with a mild left oblique strain on May 6. The Detroit Tigers added Carpenter to the list with a left shoulder sprain four days later.
Gleyber Torres expressed frustration about his recovery taking longer than expected, while the Detroit Tigers are going through a major slump in his absence. The Tigers’ second baseman took a break from swinging earlier this week after feeling lingering discomfort in his left oblique.
“From the beginning, I thought it was going to be a short period,” Torres said, as per Associated Press. “And now it takes me a little bit more than I expected. It feels really frustrating because I feel like I can’t do anything for the team.”
Torres produced 1.2 bWAR from 32 games prior to his injury. Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers have an atrocious 6-19 record in May, leaving them last in the American League Central.
