Diamondbacks’ biggest flop to begin 2026 MLB season

The Arizona Diamondbacks have opened the 2026 season above .500, but the club’s 8-6 record masks a more concerning reality. Despite the offense significantly underperforming relative to spring training expectations, no player better illustrates that disconnect than Ketel Marte. For a team with postseason ambitions in a competitive NL West landscape, the 2023 NLCS MVP’s early season slump has become the most significant—and consequential—disappointment.

Arizona’s position in the standings offers short-term reassurance, yet the underlying metrics paint a less stable picture. Through the first two weeks, the Diamondbacks have struggled to generate consistent offensive pressure, ranking in the lower third of the league in on-base percentage and slugging. The gap between outcomes and process is widening, and it raises legitimate concerns about sustainability if key contributors do not normalize.

Marte sits at the center of that concern. Entering 2026, the two-time MLB All-Star is projected as a cornerstone bat with the capability to lead the top of the order with high on-base skills and above-average power. Instead, his early production has fallen well below both his 2025 season and established career norms. A batting average south of .200, coupled with diminished extra-base impact, reflects more than a slow start—it signals a meaningful drop in overall offensive value.

Advanced metrics underscore the severity of the drop-off. Marte has opened the season with a .539 OPS and a wRC+ in the 50–60 range—both well below league average and a stark departure from the .878 OPS and 141 wRC+ he posted in 2025. His isolated power has also collapsed, falling from .224 last year to roughly .090 early in 2026, and the underlying contact quality suggests this is more than simple BABIP fluctuation.

While some regression toward his career norms—a .821 OPS and 120 wRC+—is likely over a full season, the version of the switch-hitting second baseman the club has seen as we approach mid-April more closely resembles a replacement-level regular than the 3–4 WAR contributor they projected.

The ripple effects are evident throughout the lineup. The Diamondbacks’ offensive construction is built around table-setters who can extend innings and consistently create scoring opportunities, making on-base production at the top a critical component. When Marte fails to reach base, the lineup loses its intended rhythm and continuity.

Corbin Carroll and others have delivered in stretches, but too often that production has come in isolated bursts rather than sustained pressure across innings. Without consistent traffic on the bases, those flashes fail to compound. The result is an offense that remains capable of scoring but lacks cohesion and sustained effectiveness.

Context only heightens the concern. Marte is not a complementary piece. He hits in high-leverage spots and serves as a central part of the Diamondbacks’ offensive identity. Underperformance in his role carries disproportionate weight.

To be clear, the season remains young. The infielder’s track record suggests he is capable of adjusting and regaining form over a larger sample. However, early trends matter, particularly for a team operating within narrow margins in a competitive division. If Arizona’s broader offensive struggles persist alongside Marte’s downturn, the current pace may prove difficult to maintain.

For now, the assessment is straightforward. The Diamondbacks have avoided immediate damage in the standings, but their process demands scrutiny. Until Marte returns to his expected level of production, he remains the clearest indicator of what is holding this lineup back—and the most important variable in determining whether Arizona can sustain its early position.
