Following a 13-8 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to designate reliever Dylan Floro for assignment.

Floro was acquired at the trade deadline from the Washington Nationals in exchange for one of Arizona’s top prospects, Andrés Chaparro, who has since become an everyday starter for the Nationals. However, Floro’s tenure with the Diamondbacks has been far from successful.

Since joining Arizona, Floro has struggled mightily in the bullpen, culminating in Saturday’s outing where he surrendered five earned runs over two innings, effectively sealing the Diamondbacks’ loss. In total, Floro allowed 17 earned runs in just 16.1 innings pitched for Arizona, a stark contrast to the 2.06 ERA he posted with Washington during the first half of the 2024 season.

In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks have recalled left-hander Blake Walston from Triple-A Reno. Walston, a former first-round pick in the 2019 draft, made his major league debut on May 1st against the Dodgers, where he allowed two earned runs over 3.2 innings. He made several short starts after that, posting a solid 2.84 ERA across 12.2 innings.

During Walston’s last start with the Reno Aces, which came on September 10th, he tossed 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run.

Arizona will attempt to avoid a series sweep against the Brewers in the upcoming finale, with ace Zac Gallen set to take the mound. The Diamondbacks currently hold a slim one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
