PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks continued to make history in their win against the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday night, extending their Major League Baseball save record.

In the second game of the three-game series, the Diamondbacks stayed within one run of the National League East champions, coming back from an early 2-0 deficit after the first inning. Arizona first baseman Ildamero Vargas knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single, bringing in catcher James McCann.

With a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning, Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher John Curtiss was given the save opportunity. After getting a groundout and a flyout for the first two outs, Curtiss gave up a single to Philadelphia shortstop Bryson Stott.

However, Curtiss would get the next batter to hit the first pitch for a force out at second base and earn a save.

Curtiss joined a long list of pitchers to record a save for the D-Backs this season, becoming the 17th different pitcher to close out a win, according to the team’s broadcast. The save also extended the team’s MLB record for most pitchers to record a save in a single season.

Arizona has utilized a wide range of arms in high-leverage situations throughout the year. Injuries have played a role in the team’s historic bullpen usage, with key relievers unable to pitch this season.

Yet, the Diamondbacks continue to be in the middle of a tight wild-card race with a crucial and unpredictable bullpen.

With seven games left in the regular season, Arizona may add to its historic feat as the team continues to fight for a spot in the postseason.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Philadelphia Phillies wrap up their series on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1:10 p.m.
