The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their ongoing road trip on Thursday against the New York Mets after splitting the first two games of the series.

Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll was coming off delivering one of his most productive games of the season, and it coincided with his 500th career MLB appearance on Wednesday.

Carroll recorded three extra-base hits, including two doubles and a triple, adding to a strong start for Carroll, who entered Thursday batting .333 (14-for-42) with three doubles, three triples, two home runs and 11 RBIs.

Despite all that momentum, Carroll was not in Thursday’s lineup, marking his first absence of the 2026 season and creating some concern about his status.

Manager Torey Lovullo revealed the reasons behind his decision, saying he made it after Carroll experienced tightness in his left hip flexor following Wednesday’s game.

Lovullo said Carroll first felt the issue while rounding second base on his triple, but did not notice the tightness until after the game ended.

“Standing out there in the cold, he had two doubles and a triple, he’s running around like a madman, and it just got tight,” Lovullo said. “So instead of throwing him back out there and asking his body to do something that might cause some more damage, we decided to get him off of his feet.”

Lovullo had a reassuring message for Diamondbacks fans worried about the worst outcomes.

“Very minimal [concern],” Lovullo said.

Jorge Barrosa replaced Carroll in right field as Arizona demolished New York, beating them 7-1 in the series finale. Barrosa, for one, went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI on Thursday, striking out once.

Lovullo also emphasized the need for broader production across the lineup moving forward, making it clear that missing Carroll or any other player here and there shouldn't be the be-all-end-all of the Diamondbacks' season.

“I don’t want us to be reliant on Corbin [alone],” Lovullo said. “I didn't know that number — that 40 percent of our runs scored revolve around him. I think over the course of the season, you're gonna see some other players step up.”

Arizona will continue its road trip following the Mets matchup with a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies starting on Friday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
