Merrill Kelly started the 2026 season on the 15-day IL after suffering a nerve injury in his back. His latest update, however, suggests he could return soon and make his debut for the campaign with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Reports indicate that the 37-year-old right-hander is set to join the Diamondbacks’ weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies before his bullpen session on Sunday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Kelly could make his first appearance this season after the weekend against the Baltimore Orioles.

“Merrill Kelly tentatively is scheduled to join the Diamondbacks here in Philadelphia ahead of his bullpen session on Sunday, manager Torey Lovullo said,” reported Piecoro. “Sounds like Kelly will debut next week in Baltimore. Lovullo said a six-man rotation ‘has not been talked about.'”

Kelly is said to be dealing with a left intercostal nerve irritation, which caused tightness in the middle portion of his back. After being placed on the IL before Opening Day, it appears the Diamondbacks could finally have him back in the rotation.

However, it sounds like Lovullo will have a tough decision to make once Kelly is activated off the IL. The Diamondbacks have been utilizing a rotation consisting of Zac Gallen, Ryne Nelson, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Pfaadt, and Michael Soroka.

When Merrill Kelly makes his 2026 debut, it will be his eighth MLB season. He’s proven to be a solid contributor on the mound as a middle option in the rotation. Through seven years in the majors, Kelly owns a .377 career ERA and 1.197 WHIP while totaling 911 strikeouts.
