SAN DIEGO – The Diamondbacks were defeated frustratingly on Tuesday night as they were shutout against the Padres by a score of 1-0 at Petco Park.
It was a pitchers’ duel on Tuesday night as Merrill Kelly and Nick Pivetta were locked in from the start. Neither pitcher allowed a hit through three innings, and it wasn’t until the seventh inning when one of the teams got on the board. Merrill Kelly was outstanding on the day as he ended up pitching seven innings while only allowing one earned runs on four hits.
Arizona was able to get the first hit by either team in the top of the fourth inning after Corbin Carroll hit a single to right field. Ketel Marte was able to draw a walk, and after a ground ball from Geraldo Perdomo to advance the runners, Josh Naylor was intentionally walked to load the bases to bring up Eugenio Suárez with one out. Eugenio Suárez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. struck out to end the inning and left the runners stranded.
In the top of the seventh, The D-Backs were able to get bases loaded again with two outs, though Ketel Marte was unable to get it done as he struck out the leave the bases loaded for the second time on Tuesday night.

The Padres were able to get on the board first when Luis Arraez hit a solo home run off of Merrill Kelly in the bottom of the seventh inning. Arizona was close to tying this ball game when Josh Naylor hit a deep fly ball that looked like it was leaving Petco Park, though Fernando Tatis Jr. made the catch, robbing the home run. Arizona couldn’t get any other opportunities and lost 1-0 on Tuesday night, and will look to regroup on tomorrow night at Petco Park.
