It was an alarming moment for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday as Corbin Burnes left the game alongside D-Backs trainers after an apparent elbow injury.

Burnes was on track to have another stellar start as Arizona was hoping to see his Cy Young award talents on display again. Although after only throwing 70 pitches on Sunday, he was in visible discomfort. Talking with the trainers, it seemed like Burnes mentioned his elbow is dead.

Head coach Torey Lovullo said that Corbin Burnes will be having an MRI on Monday. Burnes also mentioned that, “he had never felt anything like it before”, and, “tried to shut things down before it got too bad.” (Credit Steve Gardner – USA TODAY)

In the off-season, the Arizona Diamondbacks made one of the biggest splashes and signed free agent Corbin Burnes to a six-year $210 million deal,  solidifying him as Arizona’s ace for years to come. So far on the 2025 season, Burnes has a 3-2 record with a 2.66 ERA in 64.1 innings pitched.

Burnes has been one of the most reliable pitchers when it comes to consistency, as he has started in at least 28 games in every season the last four years. The Snakes have already dealt with multiple injuries to their pitching staff, and this would be the biggest blow of them all.

Burnes spoke after the game:

“My body does a pretty good job of telling me when I need to not do things and when I can push things, and it was telling me not to push it. So hopefully, it was me kind of shutting things down before it got too bad. But I won’t really know until we get it looked at.” (Credit: Steve Gilbert – MLB | Jack Sommers – Sports Illustrated)
