Veteran infielder Thairo Estrada was supposed to be an answer for the Colorado Rockies in 2025. However, an injury-filled season that was suddenly cut short now has plenty of question marks surrounding what comes next.
On Friday, before the Rockies opened a three-game road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Estrada was transferred to the 60-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Having originally been put on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 6 after leaving an Aug. 5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays early with the injury, the move to the 60-day effectively ends the season for Estrada.
The Rockies announced today the following transactions:
— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) August 8, 2025
- Selected the contract of INF Kyle Karros (#12) from Triple-A Albuquerque.
- Selected the contract of INF Aaron Schunk from Triple-A.
- Placed INF Orlando Arcia on the 10-day injured list (right elbow inflammation).
-…
This marks Estrada's third time on the injured list in 2025, a trio of trips that limited him to just 39 games and 154 at-bats, his lowest marks since the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
Estrada was signed as a free agent this offseason by the Rockies after spending four seasons with the division rival San Francisco Giants. Part of the reason for his signing was a .348 batting average with four home runs and 18 RBI in 24 career games at Coors Field. However, Estrada never found his stride in Denver this season, hitting just .225 in 80 at-bats at altitude.
That signing was Colorado's most prominent offseason move, adding to the frustration for a franchise that still needs to win 12 of its final 48 games to avoid the most losses by any MLB team in the modern era.
While Estrada's 2025 season with the Rockies may be over, there is a question about his future in the Mile High City. The Rockies and Estrada have a mutual option in place for 2026, but an injury-filled and disappointing season may have Colorado pulling the plug on any kind of reunion.
In Estrada's absence, rookie Adael Amador is expected to see increased playing time at second. Additionally, fellow rookie Ryan Ritter may see time at second once he returns from a finger injury. He took his first swings in the batting cage on Wednesday, another step toward his potential return.
