The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking to take Game 3 of their four-game series on the road against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, but they will have to do so without first basemanFreddie Freeman, who is set to miss his first game of the 2026 MLB season.

The 36-year-old veteran is off to another strong start at the plate this year. Through his first 20 games, Freeman has posted a .296 batting average, .360 on-base percentage, .878 OPS, three home runs and 14 RBIs.

His reliability in the middle of the lineup has helped power Los Angeles to the top of the National League West with a 15-5 record, which is also the best mark in baseball.

Freeman will miss Sunday’s game at Coors Field and is likely to miss Monday’s series finale as well, but not due to injury. The Dodgers placed him on the paternity list as he and his wife, Chelsea Freeman, await the arrival of their fourth child.

The couple already has three boys, Charlie, Brandon and Maximus, and this time they are expecting a girl. As Freeman steps away to be with his growing family, the Dodgers made a corresponding roster move to add depth.

“The Dodgers recalled OF Ryan Ward and placed first baseman Freddie Freeman on the paternity list,” the team wrote on X. Ward entered the club's lineup on Sunday, batting seventh and playing first base in place of Freeman.

When Freeman returns, he will look to carry his personal milestone back onto the field as he continues to build a legacy that has him tracking toward Cooperstown.

Now in his 17th MLB season, Freeman remains one of the most impactful hitters in the sport and a major reason the Dodgers believe they can chase a third straight World Series title. His accolades include an MVP award, nine All-Star selections, three Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove.

Freeman is signed with Los Angeles through the 2027 season on his five-year, $162.5 million contract, and he has repeatedly expressed his desire to finish his career with the Dodgers.

Once he returns from the paternity list, he will look to keep producing at an elite level for a team with championship expectations. For now, the Dodgers will be without their superstar first baseman, but for the best possible reason.
