The Los Angeles Dodgers are entering a crucial stretch of the season as they fight to claim a 12th division title in 13 years, with the second-place San Diego Padres sitting just three games back in the NL West after an eventful trade deadline.
Los Angeles had a quiet deadline in 2025, but at last year’s deadline, they made a key move by acquiring veteran utility man Tommy Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-team trade.
The 30-year-old has been exactly what the Dodgers were looking for—providing elite defense, offensive bursts, and positional flexibility.
Edman played a major role in the team’s 2024 World Series run, earning NLCS MVP honors and helping push the Dodgers to a championship.
Edman has battled multiple injuries throughout the 2025 season, primarily involving his right ankle. He first experienced ankle inflammation in early May, which led to a two-week absence. He re-aggravated the injury in early June and again at the end of July, causing him to miss a start.
During Sunday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, Edman singled in the fifth inning but exited the game immediately after suffering another injury.
The team announced moments later that he suffered a right ankle sprain.

This comes at a difficult time for Los Angeles, who already lost third baseman Max Muncy to a knee injury back on July 3. Edman had been filling in at third base, and his potential absence would further test the Dodgers’ depth.
Over 122 games for Los Angeles since midway through 2024, Edman is hitting .230 with a .687 OPS, 18 home runs and 64 RBIs.
He signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension after the 2024 season, which includes a $17 million signing bonus and a club option for 2030.
