Dodgers, Chadwick Tromp Agree To Minor League Deal

The Dodgers are signing catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor league contract. He has been assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, reports OKC broadcaster Alex Freedman.

That explains why Los Angeles released Chuckie Robinson earlier today. Tromp can work with rookie Eliezer Alfonzo as depth behind the team’s big league catching duo of Hunter Feduccia and Ben Rortvedt. It’s unclear when they’ll get Will Smith back or if Dalton Rushing will be able to throw again this season after he was diagnosed with a partial UCL tear.

Tromp, 31, fits third or fourth on an organizational depth chart. He has played parts of seven big league seasons but hasn’t topped the 24 games or 64 plate appearances he reached with the 2020 Giants. The Aruba native has a .208/.215/.344 batting line with six home runs in 229 career trips to the dish. He has hit .163 without a homer in 21 contests split between the Braves and Orioles this season.

This is the first time in a while that Tromp signs with someone other than those two clubs. He’d yo-yoed between Baltimore and Atlanta on a series of minor league deals going back to 2021. Tromp doesn’t hit much at the MLB or Triple-A level, but he’s a steady hand defensively who clearly made a strong clubhouse impression with both of his previous organizations.
