The Los Angeles Dodgers’ race for an NL West title absorbed a tense moment Wednesday night when All-Star catcher Will Smith exited their matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates after taking a foul tip off his right hand.

Smith initially stayed in the game, but was removed after the second inning and replaced by rookie Dalton Rushing who pinch-hit in the third. The Dodgers called it a right hand contusion in their initial announcement.

Entering the contest, the 30-year-old backstop was hitting .297 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs, numbers that have reinforced his standing as one of the league’s top catchers. With the postseason looming, even the threat of a hand injury carried major implications for Los Angeles.

Dave Roberts Provides Postgame Update on Will Smith

After the Dodgers’ 3-0 loss at PNC Park, manager Dave Roberts offered clarity on Smith’s condition.

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya wrote on X, "X-rays are negative on Will Smith’s right hand, Dave Roberts said. Day to day. Dodgers might bring someone tomorrow in case."

This confirmation that no fracture occurred is seemingly the best-case outcome. Smith will be monitored on a daily basis, but Roberts acknowledged the front office could also move quickly to add catching insurance if soreness lingers.

Smith’s significance extends well beyond his offensive numbers. He is trusted by the pitchers, and his defensive skills like pitch framing, controlling the running game and handling scouting reports make him a stabilizing presence behind the dish.

Without him, the Dodgers would be forced to rely on Rushing and potentially even organizational depth to cover innings behind the plate. Rushing has shown flashes since his promotion but lacks Smith’s experience. The drop-off in familiarity could be felt immediately, not to mention the offensive production.

Offensively, Smith has been a consistent run producer in the heart of the order. Losing him, even for a few days, would require lineup adjustments for Roberts. That reshuffling could diminish production in a stretch where every win matters for postseason seeding.

The Dodgers finish their three-game series in Pittsburgh on Thursday before traveling to Baltimore for a weekend matchup with the Orioles. How quickly Smith returns will dictate whether the team needs to make a short-term roster move.

For now, Los Angeles can breathe easier knowing its All-Star catcher avoided a fracture. Still, his recovery will be closely watched as the Dodgers work to secure optimal positioning as October looms.
