Dodgers' Dave Roberts Gives Concerning Update on Closer

The Los Angeles Dodgers  bullpen is dealing with a significant blow as right-handed reliever Evan Phillips continues to struggle with an elbow injury that has kept him on the injured list since May 7. Manager Dave Roberts recently expressed his growing concern about Phillips' recovery, noting that the pitcher still hasn't started a throwing program.

"It's starting to get a little concerning," Roberts said. "I don’t know how long we can give it until he can attempt to start playing catch again. I’m getting a little kind of concerned, but hoping for the best."

Phillips, who was a key contributor to the Dodgers' success in 2024 with 18 saves, had returned to action in late April after recovering from a rotator cuff injury that sidelined him for the start of the season. However, after just seven appearances in 2025, including five scoreless innings, Phillips was shut down due to inflammation in his elbow.

The Dodgers had initially placed Phillips on the injured list for forearm discomfort, but an MRI later revealed the inflammation in his elbow. While no structural damage was found, Phillips' inability to resume baseball activities has left the team searching for answers. His absence is particularly painful as the Dodgers continue to deal with injuries to other key pitchers, leaving the bullpen stretched thin.

In Phillips’ absence, the Dodgers have called up veteran right-hander Chris Stratton to provide much-needed depth. Meanwhile, Phillips remains a critical piece of the bullpen puzzle, having served as the team's primary closer for stretches over the past two seasons. With a career 2.21 ERA and a strikeout rate of 29.6% from 2022 to 2024, his return is eagerly awaited, but for now, the Dodgers are left hoping that his recovery will soon take a positive turn.
