Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz was placed on the injured list due to neck inflammation on Tuesday. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters the team would know more about the situation on Wednesday, but he did say that he expected Diaz to return this season. Sure enough, the update on Wednesday does indeed hint at Diaz avoiding a significant injury.
“Dave Roberts said Edwin Díaz got a ‘best-case’ prognosis from his doctor’s visit today. MRI came back clean. No other ‘findings’ in his neck,” Jack Harris of the California Post reports. “He’ll be shut down from throwing for ‘a couple days,’ Roberts said, then they’ll see how he’s feeling from there.”
Assuming no setbacks occur, Diaz may be able to avoid missing too much time. However, an official injury return date or timeline has yet to be revealed. Nevertheless, Wednesday’s update is encouraging.
The 32-year-old reliever is one of the best closers in the game, but his first season with LA has not gone according to plan. Diaz has turned in an 11.85 ERA while on the mound, and he’s been limited to just 16 total outings because of injuries.
The hope, of course, is that Diaz will be able to return and make an impact in the postseason. For now, Tanner Scott is expected to close out most games.
Updates on Edwin Diaz’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
The Dodgers are set to play the Rockies in Colorado once again on Wednesday night at 8:40 PM ET. Los Angeles currently leads the series 2-0.
