The Dodgers announced that right-hander Brock Stewart has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Fellow righty Jonathan Hernández has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.
Hernández, 30, has been the unofficial 41st man on the Los Angeles 40-man roster this year. He began the campaign with the Phillies on a minor league deal. He opted out of that deal in May and landed a big league deal with the Dodgers. Since then, he has been bounced on and off the roster whenever the club has looked to get a fresh arm into the mix.
Since Hernández is out of options, he has been designated for assignment three times this year. After the first DFA, he cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City, which allowed the Dodgers to add him back to the roster. The second time he was designated for assignment, he cleared waivers again and elected free agency, but was quickly-resigned.
Around the transactions, Hernández has tossed 25 1/3 innings for the Dodgers over 16 appearances, allowing 5.68 earned runs per nine frames. He has a 20.2% strikeout rate, 11.9% walk rate and 40.5% ground ball rate.
Since the trade deadline has passed, Hernández will have to be back on waivers in the coming days, if he’s not already. Assuming he clears once more, he will again have the right to elect free agency. Based on how things have gone this year, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s with Triple-A Oklahoma City or back with the big league club in the near future.
