Dodgers Facing Decision After Teoscar Hernandez News

Teoscar Hernandez has struggled to find consistency for most of this season, but his production against left-handed pitching has held up far better than his overall line, and that split could soon shrink his role in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup.

Hernandez is hitting just .239 against right-handed pitching this season, but his average climbs up to .273 with a .809 OPS against left-handers.

On Monday, Dodgers Nation on X said that Dave Roberts assumes that the Dodgers will call up a left-handed bat as rosters expand on Tuesday, September 1.

The numbers back up the move. Hernandez has produced just five home runs and 14 RBIs in just 99 at-bats against lefties this season, compared with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 255 at-bats against righties, a gap that’s highlighted even more by his .668 OPS against right-handers.

Dave Roberts assumes the Dodgers will call up a lefty from Triple-A on Tuesday when rosters expand and says they could platoon with Teoscar Hernández.

James Tibbs III looks like the most likely name to get the call. The organization’s top outfield prospect has been one of the hottest hitters in the minors, batting .295 with 27 home runs, 96 RBIs and a .965 OPS in 124 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Ryan Ward remains in the mix as well. He’s already on the 40-man roster and has major league experience from earlier this season; however, if the Dodgers want their best chances on offense, Tibbs would be the way to go.

Neither the Dodgers nor Roberts have indicated any moves yet, other than the possibility of adding a left-handed bat. The decision is likely to come within the next 24 hours, as teams across the league are making roster changes as rosters expand on Tuesday.
