Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas has responded to pointed comments made by New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr., whose recent viral interview with The Athletic included allegations of racism and clubhouse misconduct dating back to their time together on the Miami Marlins.
In the interview, Chisholm alleged that Rojas destroyed a custom pair of cleats made for Chisholm’s MLB debut in 2020 by cutting them up and pouring milk inside. Chisholm framed the incident as racially charged, stating, “If this was a White boy’s stuff, you weren’t gonna cut that s— up.”
The comments have drawn attention across the baseball world, leading to backlash and defense from current and former players. Speaking before the Dodgers’ home opener on Thursday, Rojas kept his response measured.
“There are people who are going to air out what’s happening in a clubhouse, and I’m not really going to talk about it,” he said to The Athletic. “I have my own opinions… but I’m going to be professional and keep it in-house.”
While he did not directly address the specifics of Chisholm’s story, Rojas pushed back on the idea that his actions were racially motivated.
“It’s really uncomfortable saying these old-school rules are written by White people,” said Rojas, who is Venezuelan. “I come from Latin America. I keep learning about cultures. I want to continue to learn all cultures.”
Rojas emphasized his professionalism, saying his reputation and long career speak for themselves.
“I don’t need to defend myself. People who know me, know who I am.”
The tension between Chisholm and Rojas has been ongoing, with prior jabs exchanged on podcasts and in media appearances. Rojas says he hasn’t spoken to Chisholm and has no plans to.
“I’m really happy where I’m at,” Rojas said. “My career is thriving. That’s what I’m focused on.”
