The Los Angeles Dodgers roster is already filled with plenty of talent. Still, the franchise is always on the lookout for any ways they can improve as a franchise.

On Tuesday, the Dodgers acquired right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team announced. Los Angeles gave up international bonus pool money for his services.

McGarry began his MLB journey as a 31st-round pick by the Phillies back in 2017. He remained in their minor league system until 2025, when he was the third overall pick in the Rule 5 draft by the Washington Nationals. Despite that selection though, McGarry was designated for assignment and ultimately returned to the Phillies.

Over his 108 appearances at the minor league level, McGarry holds a 4.21 ERA and a 424/209 K/BB ratio. He was dominant in Double-A, posting a 2.99 ERA and a 216/101 K/BB ratio. However, Triple-A has been a major struggle, as McGarry holds a 8.48 ERA and a 66/68 K/BB ratio at that level.

Those struggles have carried into the 2026 season. Over his first six appearances in Triple-A, which have all been in relief, McGarry has registered a 9.00 ERA and a 4/7 K/BB ratio.

Still, the Dodgers clearly see something in the right-hander. With the trade now official, McGarry will report to Triple-A where he will begin playing for an organization not named the Phillies. Los Angeles is at least intrigued to see how he holds up with a change of scenery.

Looking at the Dodgers’ roster, it’d be easy for McGarry to get lost. But with acquiring him not costing much, Los Angeles will hope he is a diamond in the rough.
