Dodgers Sign Chadwick Tromp After Releasing Chuckie Robinson

The Los Angeles Dodgers released Chuckie Robinson after several scattered Major League stints over the course of two seasons. Seemingly in his place, the Dodgers signed Chadwick Tromp to a Minor League contract.

With Will Smith and Dalton Rushing both on the injured list, Tromp slots into the third- or fourth-string spot on the organizational catching depth chart.

He’s behind the current MLB duo of Hunter Feduccia and Ben Rortvedt, and now alongside Eliezer Alfonzo with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Tromp does not have an extensive history at the Major League level, having played 88 games in his career, but he has appeared in at least one game each season over the past seven years.

Tromp played for the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles this season, appearing in 12 and nine games, respectively. He is not expected to produce with his bat, but is valued for his steady presence behind the plate.

Given that Tromp was assigned to the Comets, he will serve as a veteran presence for the relatively young Alfonzo, whom the Dodgers see potential in.

The 31-year-old is hitting .163/.160/.184 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored across 49 at-bats in the Majors this season.

Dodgers release Chuckie Robinson

Robinson is now a free agent after playing in eight games with the Dodgers this season. The 31-year-old first joined the organization in 2025 after the Dodgers claimed him off waivers. He had two separate stints on the active roster, but only appeared in one game last year.

He was later claimed off waivers by the Braves in 2025 before eventually electing free agency at the end of the season.

Robinson returned to the Dodgers organization before the 2026 season by signing a Minor League contract. He was brought up to the active roster to serve as Rushing’s backup while Smith was on the IL with what was described at the time as neck discomfort.

Robinson was eventually replaced by Alfonzo as the backup catcher once it became clear that Smith’s injury was going to take longer than expected to heal. Robinson then was designated for assignment on Aug. 4 and outrighted to Oklahoma City after clearing waivers.

The journeyman catcher has two hits in 24 at-bats during sporadic time with the Dodgers.
