This is a massive deal, as Salas ranks 23rd overall on the official MLB.com prospect rankings, and he’s only 20 years old.
Salas is a 6’1”, 185 lb catcher who, according to his prospect writeup, “…was considered the No. 1 international prospect in 2023 and signed with the Padres for a $5.6 million bonus that matched that reputation.”
With Salas currently being the number one ranked prospect in the Padres organization, this is a huge deal for the team and their fans.
Salas split time between AAA and AA this season, with just 24 games in AAA and 72 in AA.
In AA, Salas had a .286 batting average, .361 OBP, and .778 OPS. Salas would also add seven home runs and 13 doubles during that span.
Salas only played 24 games, but he had a .326 batting average, .410 OBP, .949 OPS, three home runs, and six doubles.
There’s reason to be excited about Ethan Salas, and it’s going to be fun to watch him make his MLB debut.
