After a slow start to his season, Fernando Perez has returned to the form that skyrocketed him up the Blue Jays’ top prospect list.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
The Nicaraguan right-handed pitcher was relatively unknown when he signed, but he’s been one of the best-performing pitchers in the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization since 2023, ranking as our 14th-best prospect in the mid-season update. If you missed who ranked 15th, you can read about Victor Arias here.
Position: Starting pitcher
Throws: Right
Born: February 12th, 2004
Acquired: 2022 International Free Agency
Previous ranking: 12th (2025 pre-season)
During the 2022 International Free Agency period, the Blue Jays managed to sign Perez to a bonus of just $10,000 out of Nicaragua. Standing at 6’3”, 170 lbs, the right-handed pitcher began his professional career later that season, authoring a 4.53 ERA and 3.42 FIP in 43.2 innings pitched with the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays.
The 2023 season is where the right-handed pitcher started to make his mark, finishing his Florida Complex League tenure with a 2.72 ERA and 3 FIP in 49.2 innings pitched, with a 29.2 K% and 6.2 BB%.
Now a top 30 prospect, Perez had a good season with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays in 2024, posting a 4.06 ERA and 3.47 FIP in 82 innings pitched, with a 25.8 K% and 7.2 BB%. The 2025 season saw him begin the season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he had a 3.05 ERA and 3.22 FIP in 94.1 innings pitched, with a 21.8 K% and 4.9 BB%.
Coming into the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the 21-year-old had a 1.71 ERA and 3.78 FIP in 21 innings pitched. However, he gave up five earned runs in an inning to give him a 3.68 ERA in 22 innings pitched with the Fisher Cats.
In MLB Pipeline’s mid-season update, the righty ranked as their 18th-best Blue Jays’ prospect. Known more for his floor thanks to a strong command, Perez features a mid-90s fastball with an average slider. Perez also features a curveball and changeup, the latter being average, but his stuff needs to improve for his ceiling to do the same.
