Former Clemson Tiger Thrown Into Braves Roster Battle After Profar Update

With Jurickson Profar officially eligible to begin playing in minor league games this week, the Atlanta Braves are eyeing a July 2 return for the veteran outfielder following his PED suspension. But with the team’s struggles in left field continuing, a difficult question looms: Should Profar immediately reclaim his starting role, or has someone else earned a shot?

Both Alex Verdugo and Eli White have taken turns in left, but neither has secured the job outright. Verdugo has provided some timely hits but hasn’t run away with the role, while White—once a steady contributor in Ronald Acuña Jr.’s absence—has seen his playing time evaporate since the star outfielder’s return.

Yet, White’s path back onto the field may not hinge solely on the outfield. A former Clemson Tiger, White is drawing increased attention inside the Braves’ clubhouse as a possible fix for Atlanta’s lingering infield instability.

With shortstop Nick Allen struggling to deliver consistent production, and third base locked down, the Braves may be open to a creative roster tweak—one that could see White slide into a hybrid utility role that includes emergency reps at shortstop.

It’s a bold idea, but not without merit. Though White hasn’t played shortstop regularly since his college days, his athleticism, baseball IQ, and defensive versatility make him a logical candidate to plug gaps wherever needed. Atlanta’s bench has lacked depth and flexibility this season, and White could quietly solve both problems.

Meanwhile, the buzz around another name—top prospect Nacho Alvarez Jr.—is only intensifying. The 21-year-old infielder has begun a rehab assignment with the Gwinnett Stripers and could soon be knocking on the door in Atlanta. Before his wrist injury, Alvarez was slashing .297/.398 in Triple-A and earning raves for his glove and plate discipline. With third base blocked and shortstop suddenly vulnerable, he may find himself in the mix sooner than expected.

If the Braves want to reignite their playoff push, standing pat may not be an option. Profar’s return forces the issue in left field, but the bigger opportunity might lie in restructuring the infield. And if Atlanta is willing to take a risk, the next phase could include both a former Clemson Tiger and a fast-rising 21-year-old rookie changing the shape of the roster.
