Former Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner has been patiently waiting for his chance to figure out where he will play next season. Turner declined his option with the Boston Red Sox for 2024, and elected free agency for the second straight year.
There was some talk about a possible reunion with the Dodgers, but now that they've signed Shohei Ohtani to be the full-time designated hitter, they don't have a need. At this point in his career, Turner is mainly a DH, and he showed that he still has some pop left in his bat last season.
In 146 games with the Red Sox, Turner hit .276 with 23 home runs and 96 runs batted in. He could provide a team with a solid bat, and it very well could be that he heads back to where it all started.
MLB Insider Mike Puma of The New York Post is reporting that the New York Mets and Turner have been engaged in discussions to bring him back to the Mets this offseason.
"The Mets, according to a source, have been engaged in discussions with Turner’s camp after initiating contact with the former All-Star early in the offseason."
If Turner does end up back with the Mets, it would be a full-circle moment, as he was with New York from 2010-2013.
Turner has been beloved in the clubhouse over the years, and he was a major part of the Dodgers' success while with the team. The Mets lacked any stability last season, and Turner could help with that.
His bat could also be what this team has been missing, and he is likely to land a multi-year contract.
