Former MLB Reliever Fernando Rodney Eyeing Comeback

While speaking with Sam Blum of The Athletic, Rodney had this to say about his desire to return to the majors:

“I’m trying to get to 50. That’s my guess right now. I still touch 95, 94, 93, 92 when I want. I think there can be three more years. I want to reach there, then see how I feel.”

So, Rodney not only wants to play in the bigs this upcoming season but also until he turns 50. That is a big goal for the three-time All-Star, but there’s no harm in him trying.

Rodney Has the Odds Stacked Against Him in Comeback Bid

While Rodney’s determination is admirable, the odds of him returning to the majors are stacked against him. It is very difficult for a pitcher to get back into the big leagues after so many years away. It also does not help that Rodney is nearing his late 40s. To put things into better perspective, last season’s oldest player was 43-year-old Rich Hill.

However, it is also important to note that Rodney has not stopped pitching professionally. He has spent the last few seasons in the Mexican League and also pitched in the Dominican Winter League this winter. As a result, he is far from rusty. Perhaps a team could invite him to Spring Training this year because of it.

Baseball fans should be rooting for Rodney. While his chances of returning to the majors are not high, it would be awesome to see the soon-to-be 47-year-old accomplish his goal. He also needs just three saves to pass Francisco Cordero and become the Dominican Republic’s saves leader.
