Former MLB shortstop Rafael Furcal faces two felony charges following a Wednesday arrest.
Furcal was booked into Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and released on bond shortly after. The 47-year-old was charged with throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
According to Spanish reporter Tenchy Rodriguez, Furcal said he used a stone to defend himself against a truck driver attacking him with a knife. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and few other details are publicly available.
Furcal began his 14-season career by winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2000. He batted .295 with a .394 on-base percentage in his first of six seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
Furcal made three All-Star appearances for three different NL teams. He first earned the honor when registering 60 extra-base hits (35 doubles, 10 triples, and 15 home runs) and the 12th unassisted triple play in MLB history for Atlanta in 2003.
Upon joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006, Furcal batted .300 with 15 homers and 37 stolen bases. He made his second All-Star appearance before tallying a career-high .826 OPS in 2010.
After winning the 2011 World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals, Furcal received another All-Star invite despite entering the 2012 break with a .701 OPS. He last played for the Marlins in 2014.
Furcal batted .284/.346/.402 with 311 doubles, 113 home runs, and 314 steals throughout his career. He made nine separate postseason appearances, hitting 8-for-21 with two homers and three steals in a 2004 first-round loss to the Houston Astros.
