Frustrated Yankees Lament Another Failed Postseason

For the New York Yankees, October used to be about winning championships. Now, it's about coming up short.

The Yankees made another early playoff exit on Wednesday, getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS. They've now gone 17 seasons without a championship, matching their longest drought since 1979-1995.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a failure since we weren’t able to get the job done,” Ben Rice said via MLB.com. “It’s on to next year, unfortunately. … They outplayed us, plain and simple. They outpitched us, out-hit us. It’s really that simple.”

New York lost in the ALDS for the second straight year and suffered its first postseason sweep since 2022.

The Rays' dominant pitching staff muted the Yankees' bats, holding them to just five total runs across the three games.

“We’ve got to be more complete offensively, defensively, pitching,” Aaron Boone said via MLB.com. “We did really good things this year, but ultimately not good enough to beat a really good Rays team.”

Tampa Bay was clearly the best team in the American League this year, leading the league with 98 wins. New York was second with 93 wins, but the Rays proved their superiority in October. The Yankees never led at any point in the series and sorely missed Aaron Judge in their lineup.

Now, they have a long winter ahead of them to diagnose what went wrong and how to improve their roster.
