Giancarlo Stanton did not look rusty Tuesday night in his first in-game at-bats since October. In his latest rehab game with Double-A Somerset, Stanton went 2-for-3, driving in three runs over seven innings, showing off the power and clutch hitting that New York desperately hopes to see back in their lineup soon.
Stanton, sidelined all season with recurring bilateral elbow epicondylitis, has been progressing steadily after being moved from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list earlier this season. This strong rehab outing provides optimism that his troublesome elbows are responding positively and could allow for a return to the Yankees lineup in the near future.
That future could be as soon as this weekend.
Since joining the Yankees in a blockbuster deal in December 2017, Stanton's tenure has been defined by potent power and persistent injuries. Though he exploded onto the scene in 2018 with 38 home runs and 100 RBIs, subsequent seasons have seen him plagued by various muscular and elbow issues. His durability concerns have limited him to just over half the possible games since 2019, creating frustration around his intermittent availability.
Yet, when healthy, Stanton remains a decisive factor. He earned MVP honors in the 2022 All-Star Game and again in the 2024 ALCS, propelling the Yankees to their first World Series appearance in 15 years. His combination of power and clutch performance under pressure underscores why his return is so eagerly anticipated.
With his recent performance at Somerset, the Yankees have to be encouraged. He is scheduled to DH again on Wednesday night for Somerset. Before the Yankees' Tuesday night game against the Royals, manager Aaron Boone said that they had not ruled out Stanton rejoining the Yankees' lineup this weekend in Fenway against the Boston Red Sox.
