The San Francisco Giants are acquiring minor league left-handed pitcher Tony Neubeck from the Washington Nationals in exchange for infielder Nate Furman as the team works to clear space on its 40-man roster.
The trade was reported Sunday by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who cited sources familiar with the deal. Passan reported that San Francisco is expected to make additional roster moves ahead of the deadline to reduce its 40-man roster to the required limit.
The Nationals also announced the transaction Sunday, with president of baseball operations Paul Toboni confirming the acquisition of Furman. Washington additionally designated left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady for assignment, according to Nationals Communications, via MLB.com.
Neubeck, 23, signed with Washington as a free agent on Aug. 25, 2026, and was assigned to the Fredericksburg Nationals. He appeared in two minor league games this season, pitching six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and a 0.50 WHIP, per MLB statistics.
The Minnesota native attended Indiana University and previously played at the University of Missouri. His minor league transaction history also includes assignments with the Burlington Sock Puppets and Danville Otterbots in 2025.
In exchange, Washington receives Furman, a 25-year-old infielder who made his major league debut with San Francisco on Aug. 1.
Furman appeared in 22 games for the Giants in 2026, recording four hits, three RBI, five walks and two runs scored. He also made eight starts at second base.
The infielder spent much of the season with Triple-A Sacramento, where he batted .293 with 25 doubles, seven home runs, 48 RBI and 19 stolen bases across 102 games.
Furman has demonstrated strong plate discipline throughout his minor league career, recording 169 walks compared with 166 strikeouts over four seasons. He owns a .292 batting average, .400 on-base percentage and .404 slugging percentage in the minors.
Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Charlotte, Furman joined San Francisco in August 2024 as the player to be named later in the trade that sent pitcher Alex Cobb elsewhere.
The deal gives San Francisco another left-handed pitching prospect while opening a spot on its 40-man roster ahead of the upcoming deadline.
