Giants Considering Selling at Trade Deadline

It seems like a matter of time before the San Francisco Giants wave the white flag for the 2026 season.

Although the trade deadline is not until August 3, the Giants are tied with the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels for the second-worst record in MLB at 29-43; only the Colorado Rockies (27-45) are worse. San Francisco is nine games out of a Wild Card spot. As a result, they're moving closer towards becoming sellers at the deadline.

On Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported about who the Giants could make available at the deadline if they choose to sell. Rosenthal wrote that over the past few days, president of baseball operations Buster Posey was "putting out feelers" on some of their players.

Most of the Giants' key contributors were named in Rosenthal's article - Willy Adames, Luis Arraez, Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, Robbie Ray and Logan Webb were all mentioned. Of these options, the most likely to go are Arraez and Ray.

Arraez, 29, signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the Giants late in the offseason despite being a three-time batting champion with three different clubs. He's since responded with a .319/.352/.435 slash line, 22 extra-base hits and just 13 strikeouts in 306 plate appearances. Arraez has also made tremendous improvement in the field, with eight fielding runs this season as opposed to -44 fielding runs in his first seven seasons. With Arraez enjoying his best campaign since 2023, he'd be the Giants' best trade chip.

As for Ray, he'd net a far less significant return due to his $25 million AAV, but it still makes sense for the Giants to move him because he's in the final year of his contract. The 34-year-old southpaw has struggled this season with a 4.42 ERA and 5.26 FIP in 73.1 innings, but Ray is just one season removed from an All-Star campaign and a solid 3.65 ERA in over 180 frames.

Giants' Logan Webb is Off-Limits

While the Giants are testing the waters for potential trades, Rosenthal also noted that the team has "zero plans" to trade rotation ace Logan Webb.

Webb, 29, has anchored San Francisco's rotation since 2021 and currently holds a 3.46 ERA and 2.99 FIP in 75.1 innings. He's posted 23.2 fWAR from 2021 to 2025, including a career-best 5.5 fWAR last season thanks to 224 strikeouts against only 46 walks in 207.0 innings.

The Giants' refusal to trade Webb is indicative of their future plans. Although this season has been a disaster, they don't want to start over from scratch and instead plan to contend with the players they have. As such, expect the Giants to unload players with less years of control remaining at the deadline, and don't be surprised if they go back to making offseason splashes in an effort to reload for 2027.
