The Giants announced Monday that they’ve designated left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartin for assignment, dropping their 40-man roster to an even 40 players. San Francisco also declined its $800K option on righty Rowan Wick, who’ll receive a $100K buyout. Wick remains with the club for now as an arbitration-eligible player.
San Francisco acquired Sanmartin early last offseason, claiming him off waivers from Cincinnati. The southpaw suffered a hip injury in Spring Training and missed the first couple months. He was up and down from Triple-A the rest of the way, allowing a 4.22 ERA across 21 1/3 innings. He got ground-balls at a monster 63.8% clip but only managed a 17.2% strikeout rate.
As one might infer from those rate stats, Sanmartin leans most heavily on a sinker. He has a three-pitch mix but only sits around 92 mph with his fastball. Sanmartin had a career-low walk rate in 2026 (7.5%) yet struggled with his control during his time in Cincinnati. He’s also out of options and would need to break camp next year if he’s on a club’s 40-man roster. The Giants will trade or waive him in the next five days.
Wick, 34 later this week, missed the entire season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The Giants knew that’d be the case when they signed him to an $880K free agent deal last February. Wick hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022. He worked 42 2/3 frames of 0.84 ERA ball with a 30.4% strikeout rate in Japan during the ’25 season before his elbow gave out.
San Francisco apparently doesn’t want to lock in an $800K salary for Wick at this point of the offseason. He remains eligible for arbitration but would presumably earn at least that much if he’s tendered a contract. (The league minimum salary will be determined in the next collective bargaining agreement but should rise from this year’s $780K mark.) There’s a decent chance this points to Wick being non-tendered, but the Giants can decide that in a couple weeks. For now, he’ll collect the buyout and remain on the roster.
