The Cleveland Guardians were one out away from a wild comeback win Monday night, but Sam Antonacci flipped the ending. The Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox matchup turned brutal when Chicago rallied for a 6-5 walk-off victory at Rate Field.

The Guardians held a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth after working through a chaotic inning. Patrick Bailey delivered the go-ahead RBI single after the Guardians were given new life late in the game by a series of walks and a costly wild pitch.

That put Cade Smith in charge of the game. The closer entered with a chance to finish a hard-earned road win, but the White Sox immediately applied pressure.

Smith walked Braden Montgomery, then allowed a key double to Tristan Peters. He still battled back, striking out Jacob Gonzalez for the second out and moving the Guardians within one pitch of escaping with a win.

White Sox on CHSN shared the decisive moment on X, formerly Twitter, after the rookie came through with a two-out, two-run single to finish the comeback.

“SAM ANTONACCI WALKS IT OFF ”

Antonacci’s swing gave them their sixth walk-off win of the season, tying the club for the most in Major League Baseball. It also handed Smith the loss, dropping him to 2-1.

The ending stung because Cleveland had already completed the difficult part. The Guardians absorbed Chicago’s late pressure, answered in the ninth, and put their top late-inning arm in position to close.

Instead, the White Sox turned the final frame into one of their most dramatic wins of the season. The broadcast captured the confusion and celebration as umpires reviewed the chaotic finish.

For Cleveland, the loss will be difficult to shake after a ninth-inning comeback turned into a walk-off defeat within minutes, leaving the Guardians needing a quick response after letting a winnable division matchup slip away.
