While the Detroit Tigers are 15-15 through their first 30 games and are firmly in the mix of the AL Central, rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle is having himself a stellar start to his MLB career. It’s going so well, in fact, that McGonigle is already making franchise history for the club.
Reports indicate that the 21-year-old slugger is having one of the best rookie seasons in Tigers history, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. McGonigle is setting a record pace for doubles, while his ability to get on base is off the charts.
“Detroit Tigers rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle is producing one of the best rookie seasons in Tigers’ history,” reported Nightengale. “He is their [first] left-handed hitter to produce 11 doubles before May. He has reached base [in] 25 consecutive games that he’s started, longest by a Tigers rookie since 1980.”
The former second-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft is playing as one of, if not the best, hitters on the Tigers’ roster right now. Through 110 at-bats, McGonigle has recorded 36 hits, two home runs, and 12 RBIs, giving him a .327 batting average and .417 OBP. He also leads the AL in triples with two, and leads all of MLB in WAR with 2.0.
He has been amazing from the get-go, as Kevin McGonigle went 4-5 at the plate with two doubles in the Tigers’ 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres in his MLB debut. There are still plenty of games remaining on the regular season schedule, but McGonigle is seemingly making himself a possible AL Rookie of the Year candidate early on in the 2026 campaign.
Kevin McGonigle will have a chance to add to his hot start on Wednesday. The Tigers are set to take on the Atlanta Braves on the road at 7:15 p.m. EST in the second contest of a three-game series.
