Interesting update emerges about Bo Bichette’s future

Bo Bichette’s opt-out decision may end up going down to the wire.

It is a “genuine coin flip” as to whether or not the New York Mets infielder Bichette will test free agency this winter, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Thursday. Passan did ultimately predict though that Bichette would end up opting out of his contract with the team.

The two-time All-Star Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets last offseason. But the deal also came with opt-out clauses after each season, the first of which Bichette can trigger this winter.

Bichette has not been particularly impressive this season for the disappointing 68-78 Mets. Overall on the year, he is batting .265 with 16 home runs and 73 RBIs over 144 games.

If Bichette decides to opt in, he will be owed $42 million by the Mets next season. That said, this year’s MLB free agent class is regarded as so weak that the righty-hitting Bichette would be a real standout and could be in line for a pay raise if he chooses to opt out (even given his mediocre 2026 season).

At 28 years old, Bichette is still young enough to be able to bet on himself. With the Mets also seemingly being willing to part ways with Bichette, perhaps the former AL hits leader will be willing to test the open waters again.
