Jazz Chisholm, Jr. Hits the Minor Leagues

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is another step closer to returning to games. The New York Yankees' dynamic infielder was in Somerset, New Jersey, Tuesday, home of the Yankees' Double-A franchise, taking batting practice.

It comes on the heels of Yankees manager Aaron Boone saying on Monday that Chisholm could begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week. That depended on how he responded to his full workout on Monday.

That he was in Somerset is an indication that the workout went well and he's ready to get the rehab assignment going.

Chisholm's injury happened during an at-bat and subsequent slide during a game in Baltimore against the Orioles on April 29. Chisholm was shocked when the MRI showed a pretty significant oblique strain and he had to go on the 10-day injured list.

At the time, he was batting .181 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs over 30 games. Despite the low batting average, his power and defensive contributions were valuable to the team.

Initially, Chisholm was not shy about wanting to skip a rehab assignment, citing past experiences. However, the Yankees' medical staff and management have taken a very cautious approach with this injury. Boone has been pretty adamant all along this would be a thorough process.

If all goes well, Chisholm could rejoin the Yankees as early as next week, providing a boost to their infield depth and offensive lineup. His return would be timely, especially with the team managing other injuries, especially having lost Oswaldo Cabrera for the season to a fractured ankle.
