Jonatan Clase considered day-to-day, Myles Straw hoping to avoid IL stint following injury departures

Following a rough night for a pair of Toronto Blue Jays outfielders, the team appears to have caught a break with Jonatan Clase and Myles Straw.

Both departed Tuesday’s 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks due to injury. Clase exited in the fourth inning after being hit in the right knee by a 93-m.p.h. sinker from right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Straw, who entered off the bench as his replacement, injured his right ankle after crashing into the centre-field wall on Josh Naylor’s double in the fifth.

Thankfully, Clase is feeling much better and could be an option off the bench on Wednesday, as manager John Schneider told reporters pre-game. Straw is also improving, but the Blue Jays want to give him a day or two to rest before returning to game action. The hope is he’ll be able to avoid an IL stint.

The great thing about rostering five traditional outfielders and two infielders capable of playing beyond the dirt (Davis Schneider, Addison Barger) is that the Blue Jays won’t be shorthanded while Clase and Straw are out of the lineup.

With left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez starting Wednesday for Arizona, Toronto’s bench — not including Clase or Straw — features a pair of left-handed-hitting outfielders in Alan Roden and Will Robertson. Either could be summoned as a pinch-hitter for Schneider later in the game if a righty enters from the D-backs’ bullpen.

Clase, acquired along with catcher Jacob Sharp in last season’s Yimi García trade from the Seattle Mariners, doesn’t possess flattering overall results in the majors this season, hitting .205/.279/.282 with one home run and six RBIs in 25 games. But the switch-hitting outfielder has continued to gain more confidence and has looked more comfortable at the plate in recent weeks.

Straw has fit in extremely well since arriving via trade with international bonus pool money from the Cleveland Guardians over the off-season, accounting for 0.6 fWAR across 59 games. He’s been effective versus left-handed pitching, slashing .310/.333/.379 with eight RBIs and a 103 wRC+ over 61 plate appearances.
