Joshua Baez Has Arrived in a Major Way

This afternoon, in the middle game of the Cardinals and Cubs three-game series, the Cardinals’ third-ranked prospect made his big-league debut: Joshua Baez. Baez is the 59th overall prospect in baseball. He did something that has never been done before in MLB history. He hit three home runs in his MLB debut, all of which came in his first three plate appearances.

He made his presence felt right away as he hit the first pitch he saw 440 feet for a two-run home run.

His second at-bat came in the fourth inning when he got to a full count and crushed his second home run of the game.

In his third at-bat in the sixth inning, with a runner on first and a 1-0 count, he would hit his third to make it 6-3 Cardinals.

Baez’s final at-bat saw him line out to left field on a 2-2 count. He didn’t record his first swing-and-miss as a big leaguer until his fourth at-bat. This wasn’t the first time Baez has done something like this in a game this season. Back on June 16th in a game at Triple-A with Memphis, Baez hit four home runs in a game against the Nashville Sounds, the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate. The home runs came on a night in which it was the three-year anniversary of his late father’s passing.

The Cardinals won the game 8-4. They had five home runs in the game: Baez’s three, Blaze Jordan, and Alec Burleson all hit home runs. Baez finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored.
