Juan Soto is an indispensable component of the New York Mets lineup from an offensive standpoint. Therefore, it was a huge blow for the team when the left-handed slugger hobbled off against the San Francisco Giants on April 3. The Mets transferred Soto to the IL with a right calf strain the next day.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports that Juan Soto started swinging a bat indoors, besides playing catch, as he continues his recovery from the injury. However, he is still prohibited from running. Therefore, Soto will continue taking part in mild training activities, but there is no timeline yet for him to start a running program.
“Juan Soto (calf) has been swinging a bat indoors and playing catch, but he’s not close to beginning a running program,” DiComo posted on X. “He’ll continue to participate in light baseball activities while he heals.”

The Mets initially placed Soto on the 10-day IL, which sets his return date for mid-April. Even though it is a minor injury, his return to the team will depend on how his calf heals in the meantime.
Francisco Lindor spoke with Deesha Thosar of FOX Sports regarding the absence of Juan Soto from the New York Mets lineup. The Mets’ shortstop stated that losing Soto is a damaging blow to the team. He hopes the four-time All-Star makes a swift recovery to get back into the side.
“He’s irreplaceable,” Lindor said on Wednesday. “He’s a top-three player in the league–he’s that good. As a team, we’ve always said that it’s about sticking together at a time like this.
“Gather around him and be all together in this, and support him and play for each other. I hope this is a very short, very short IL for him.”
Juan Soto got off to a hot start to the 2026 season before landing on the IL. He holds a .355/.412/.516 slash line with a 168 OPS+, even though he has just three extra base hits thus far.
