Kevin Gausman reaping benefits of ’emotional’ Chicago Cubs trade

Kevin Gausman was on the Toronto Blue Jays team plane when he found out he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He shared an emotional moment with manager John Schneider once he was made aware of the news.

Gausman was in his fifth season with the Blue Jays, crafting his legacy with the franchise. At the same time, he and his family had grown accustomed to what Toronto had offered. Having to move their lives, and Gausman’s playing career, was a difficult task for all involved.

However, it didn’t take long for the right-hander to find his footing in Chicago. One series with the Cubs, and Gausman realized the opportunity that was in front of him.

From Aug. 3-5, the Cubs hosted the defending Los Angeles Dodgers. They came away with a sweep, proving they could hang with the best. While Gausman didn’t pitch during that series, he clearly saw what Chicago was all about, via Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic.

“Every single game was absolutely electric,” Gausman said. “It took me like two days to kind of flip it from being sad to being excited, to be like, ‘I have an opportunity to be part of something special here.’”

Gausman has made six starts since joining the Cubs, sporting a 4-1 record. The righty holds a 4.37 ERA and a 38/8 K/BB ratio. While there have been a few blow up outings, Gausman is coming off a gem. In a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, he threw seven innings of one-run baseball, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Set to be a free agent after the season, Gausman will have to make a crucial decision on where he wants t continue his career if he keeps playing. If the Cubs are able to go on a deep playoff run, perhaps they convince the right-hander to run it back.
