Lane Thomas Makes Personal Admission After Braves Trade

The Atlanta Braves completed a trade with the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Lane Thomas on Saturday. The Braves also received left-hander Bailey Falter in the deal, while giving up minor league arms Lucas Braun (AAA) and Carter Holton (A).

The 30-year-old Thomas has played mostly center field this season, but will play left field for the Braves. He will do that for a squad that is 67-45, first place in the National League East and eight and a half games up on the second-place Philadelphia Phillies.

In 101 games this season, Thomas is slashing .232/.326/.393 (.719 OPS) with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs. He will be a free agent following the year, and how he plays with Atlanta in the second half will determine his plans for next year.

With Michael Harris II in center field and Ronald Acuña Jr . in right field, Thomas has been brought in as bench depth for left field. The Braves currently roster Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón, two primary corner outfielders.

Thomas’ playing time will strictly come against left-handed pitchers. In 135 plate appearances this year, he has tallied 11 extra-base hits and an .800 OPS against them.

Thomas said Sunday that he will be catching a flight to his hometown of Knoxville, Tenn. before driving to Truist Park on Monday to meet his Braves teammates, per Chad Bishop of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This will be Thomas’ fifth team of his now eight-year big league career. He started with the St. Louis Cardinals, then played for the Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians and Royals in that order.

For his career, Thomas has posted a slash line of .240/.311/.415 for a .726 OPS. He has played a good deal of all three outfield positions to below-average defensive results. His platoon value is what matters for a Braves team that is worse versus LHPs.

Atlanta still has to hold onto the division over Philadelphia, but their minds might soon shift to an arms race for the NL’s No. 1 seed. They are in fierce competition with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers for the moment.
