SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners rookie starting pitcher Logan Evans had the best start of his career and was supported by his starting catcher Cal Raleigh in a 9-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park. Seattle improved to 30-23 on the season and maintained a 1.5-game lead over the Houston Astros in the American League West.
Evans went eight innings — the longest outing for a Mariners starter this season.
"Obviously the story — Logan Evans," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview. "I thought, from pitch one, did a really good job of getting ahead and controlling the count, which is what we talk about lot. Had a really good breaking ball tonight. Had really good stuff all around and took advantage of some early swings on their part to get deep into the game."
Evans was bolstered by a solid early start from the Mariners' superstars. Julio Rodriguez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Raleigh followed the next at-bat with the first of his two solo homers for the day. Seattle led 3-0 through the first inning.

That lead was more than enough for Evans to work from. He made easy work of the all-lefty Nationals lineup. He finished with four strikeouts in his eight innings of work, walked one and allowed one earned run on four hits (one home run). He faced 27 batters — just three more than the minimum. Evans' day ended after Randy Arozarena sprinted into foul territory in left field to catch a fly ball hit by Daylen Lile. Evans walked off the field to a standing ovation from the home crowd at T-Mobile Park and acknowledged the fans. He also received a celebratory water douse after the game.

Evans' only blemish was a solo homer allowed to James Wood in the top of the fourth.
"Solos aren't gonna kill you," Evans said after the game. "I think I've also proved that over however many starts I've made so far. If it doesn't go my way, I'm just gonna keep getting in there. My advantage is throwing strikes and getting ahead. And I felt like I did that all night, and I wasn't gonna let one swing change that. I didn't even really even notice it in the moment. ... Just keep attacking guys and get the hitters out."

Raleigh got the Mariners' lead back to three with his second solo homer of the day in the bottom of the fifth. He finished the game 2-for-5 with his two runs and two RBIs off his pair of homers.
"To me, I'm just trying to be as consistent as possible," Raleigh said postgame. "I'm not really trying to change or do anything different. I'm trying to just do the same thing every day. If I go hitless, or have a bad game, (I) understand that's just kind of part of it. And understand that I'll be better off if I just stick with what I do well rather than trying to go and change something."
Seattle's offense continued to reward Evans for his masterclass. Dylan Moore scored on a fielder's choice, Ben Williamson scored on a groundout and Williamson scored on an RBI single hit by Rodriguez — all in the bottom of the sixth. The Mariners led 7-1 after the trio of scores.
Rodriguez, Moore and Williamson were Seattle's three other players aside from Raleigh with multiple hits. Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, Moore went 3-for-4 with a run and two doubles and Williamson finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Arozarena grounded into a force out in the bottom of the eighth to score Williamson. J.P. Crawford scored on the same play after Washington second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. committed a throwing error to first base trying to turn a double play. Arozarena was credited with the RBI on Williamson's score.
The Mariners will try to secure the series win against the Nationals at 6:40 p.m. PT on Wednesday. Trevor Williams will start for Washington and George Kirby will start for Seattle.

Athletics rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz already had an impressive start to his career. Kurtz entered Friday having posted a .288/.360/.622 batting line in 265 plate appearances, hitting 19 homers and 17 doubles. Despite making his major league debut on April 23, Kurtz has been the A's most valuable player, leading the team with 2.6 bWAR. He appeared to be on the cusp of becoming the superstar the A's needed to sell the team to the residents of Las Vegas. That performance set the stage for what may have been the most impressive game for any rookie in major league history. Kurtz became the 20th player in MLB history to have a four-home run game and the first rookie to achieve that feat. Kurtz's performance also put the 2025 season into baseball history. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez had a four-home run game on April 26, making this the third time that there have been two four-homer games in a season. That had happened in 2002 (outfielders Mike Cameron and Shawn Green) and 2017 (utility man Scooter Gennett and left fielder J.D. Martinez). Kurtz did not stop with those four homers. He was 6-6 in the A's 15-3 victory over the Astros, with a double and eight runs batted in. The favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award, Kurtz put an emphatic stamp on an already impressive season with his barrage on Friday.
According to some, throw out the idea that the Edmonton Oilers should pursue Max Pacioretty. A veteran forward who has earned over $63 million over the course of his NHL career has yet to sign an NHL contract and was recently mentioned in a post by David Staples as a possible fit. In a recent post, the Journal noted, “All of the top NHL unrestricted free agents have already signed contracts, but there’s one big name player still available that makes good sense for the Edmonton Oilers to pursue.” Responses have been varied, with a few quite vocal about the Oilers not following Staples’ advice. “In what world does this make sense?????” writes a commenter on a recent post for The Hockey Writers. Another commenter wrote, “Pacioretty is a good journeyman player but he is injury prone now, late in his career. Oilers might be lucky to get 40 games out of him. They should look elsewhere instead of taking a chance on Patches.” Tyler Yaremchuk of Oilers Nation chimed in and said, “He scored five goals in 37 games last year with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Can’t stay healthy, very old, very slow.” Yaremchuk then went on a rant, listing several Oilers forwards who would be better than Pacioretty. What About Pacioretty on a PTO? Is there any reason that a team that is looking to get younger and faster, and move out depth pieces that were older and less productive than expected, would revert back to last summer’s strategy? It seems like an odd choice on the surface. Something would have to happen that would make giving Pacioretty a look risk-free. That means only a PTO. Even at that point, should he agree, it would require him to be willing to sign a two-way contract for the league minimum.
The Las Vegas Raiders just stunned the league by releasing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins after only one year with the team. After signing a four-year, $110 million contract, he struggled with injuries in 2024. This was supposed to be a big bounce-back year for Wilkins, but after a dispute between the two sides in regard to how to handle his foot injury, the team decided it was best to part ways. Now, a premier interior disruptor is suddenly available. Assuming his medicals get checked out soon, there should be a lot of interest around the league. Where should he land? Dallas Cowboys Dallas has needed a dominant interior presence for quite some time. Osa Odighizuwa is an awesome threat, but he is only solid against the run. Alongside him, the team will be banking heavily on 2023 first-rounder Mazi Smith, who has been disappointing so far. With Dallas looking to return to the playoffs, adding a stud like Wilkins could give Dallas one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. San Francisco 49ers The 49ers added some young bodies in CJ West and Alfred Collins, yet neither offer a proven, all-around talent like Wilkins could if healthy. The 49ers defensive line was horrid outside of Nick Bosa in 2024, but by adding Wilkins, the team would now have a solid cast of starters with Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Wilkins and Kevin Givens/Jordan Elliott. Miami Dolphins A return to Miami makes a ton of sense for both sides. The Dolphins know exactly how to use Wilkins, he knows the building and players, and the transition would be very easy. Miami needs help in the interior defensive line; by plugging Wilkins back into his old role, he could offer the quickest path to high-level impact. Detroit Lions With Levi Onwuzurike out with injury and Detroit needing more juice on the defensive line, adding a proven disruptor like Wilkins could make some sense. He could provide more depth while he gets fully healthy, and he can join a legit Super Bowl contender. His energy and mentality could be a good fit for a Dan Campbell-led squad. Jacksonville Jaguars The Jaguars defense is average in the interior, but they have excellent edge-rushers who would benefit greatly from a strong disruptor up the middle. Wilkins could balance the front, help in the run defense and allow more one-on-ones for their premier edge-rushers. For a team that wants to return to the playoffs as soon as possible, adding a veteran like Wilkins could be a worthy bet to make.
The Miami Dolphins lost another cornerback when Artie Burns suffered a torn ACL on the first day of training camp, and they may have found a potential replacement. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that the Dolphins have agreed to a deal with former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones. The Dolphins were already thin at the cornerback position before Burns was lost for the year. They released Kendall Fuller after the 2024 season and traded former All-Pro Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers last month. Jones is a talented player, but character concerns have followed him throughout his career. He played in all 17 games for the Raiders last season, making 16 starts. Jones had 69 total tackles and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Despite his solid play, Jones was cut by Las Vegas in April. The Raiders had claimed Jones off waivers midway through the 2023 season after he was cut by the New England Patriots, likely because of his off-field issues. Then-Patriots head coach Bill Belichick suspended Jones at the end of the 2022 season for a violation of team rules. Several months later, Jones was arrested at Logan Airport in Boston on gun-related charges. Jones, 27, was also criticized over his perceived lack of effort during some games with Las Vegas. But the Dolphins are desperate, and Jones has plenty of upside. The former fourth-round pick out of Arizona State has shown he is worthy of being a starter when his focus is solely on football. Miami is hoping to get that version of Jones.
