Los Angeles Dodgers Position Preview: Third Base
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images

Third base seems like one of the only positions the Los Angeles Dodgers didn't try to upgrade at this offseason. Max Muncy will be the Opening Day third baseman for the Dodgers when they square off against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo in just under a month.

Outside of Muncy, Los Angeles has several options to serve as backup third basemen. Chris Taylor and Kike Hernandez are super utility men that could spend time at third base if they are needed. Miguel Rojas is another name that could spend time there if he is needed.

Third base was a struggle last season for the Dodgers due to injuries that caused Muncy to miss nearly 100 games. Even though they were fifth in team WAR (1.7) at third base, it was still a position of struggle and something they hope will improve this season.

As aggressive as the Dodgers are known to be, it would not be a surprise at all if they tried to make a splash and made a run at third basemen Nolan Arenado or Rafael Devers at the trade deadline if they are not getting the production they'd like from Muncy and the others.

The Dodgers third basemen do have the leisure of not being expected to produce at a high rate because it is probably the weak link of their roster. Any sort of extreme production from Muncy, Taylor, Hernandez, or whoever else may play the position will be a bonus and make it even harder for a team to record 27 outs against them in a game.
