Luis Severino of the Athletics has landed on the injured list after suffering a left oblique strain, retroactive to Wednesday. Injuries continue to hinder Severino, who has been no stranger of having trouble staying on the field. Luis Severino had a 6-11 record this year and a 4.82 ERA. He has struggled mightily to say the least this year. With this move, the A’s could prioritize left-handed pitcher Jeffery Springs, who is having a fabulous year, and see what he can do in an ace type of role with the team.
When Luis Severino has been on the mound, he’s an electrifying talent, subtracting this year. But throughout his career, he has had major injury issues. From 2019-2021, he threw a combined total of 18 innings with the Yankees. He eventually came back to New York in 2022, having a good year followed by a bad year, and signed with the Mets in 2024 before signing with the A’s this past offseason.
Earlier in his career, Severino was a horse. He had back-to-back seasons of 190+ innings thrown in 2017-2018. Whether the injuries have caught up to him or it’s just age, Severino isn’t the same flamethrower he was. He’s been better than perhaps his numbers show, as the Athletics have not been a competitive team this season. How will this injury affect Severino going forward?
There are a lot of positives to take away from the A’s, despite their record. Rookie Nick Kurtz is in the middle of a breakout season, and is becoming one of the young stars in baseball. Furthermore, A’s star Brent Rooker has expressed his desire to live in Las Vegas, despite there being rumors that he could be on the move. The Athletics have the pieces in place to contend in a couple of years.
