One of the best rivalries in Major League Baseball will be back again over the weekend after playing each other last week, as the Boston Red Sox will take on the New York Yankees in a three-game series starting on Friday night in Boston.
The Red Sox and Yankees are arguably the biggest rivalry in sports history, making this a very exciting time for all players on both sides.
When speaking to reporters about the situation and the upcoming series, newcomer Marcelo Mayer admitted that he's pumped about this series. For one of the top prospects in baseball, and a big piece to the Red Sox's future, it's awesome to hear that Mayer is ready to play against the Yankees and do whatever he can to help Boston get some wins against them.
“It’s gonna be fun,” Mayer said, as seen on NESN. “Friday, Saturday, Sunday night, I know this place is gonna be rocking. I know we’re ready for it. We’re gonna go out there and play really hard and see what happens.”
This is a big series for the Red Sox for plenty of reasons. For one, they sit nine games behind in the American League East.
The Yankees have been one of the better teams in Major League Baseball, but if the Red Sox can keep chipping away at this lead, they should be in a decent spot come the trade deadline.
They took two of three against them last weekend in the Bronx, and if they can continue to play this way and get it to around seven games before the trade deadline, they should have a chance to win the division in the last two months of the regular season.
