Mariners’ perfect trade offer for Giants’ Rafael Devers

A half-game behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West, the Seattle Mariners are looking to get past an inconsistent start to the season. Last year, the Mariners captured their first division title since 2001’s record-breaking effort. Seattle has what could be the best starting rotation in the major leagues, plus a growing offense. Due to multiple young players in their lineup, the M’s attack has a boom or bust element to it. Luckily, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney on X (formerly Twitter), the San Francisco Giants are open to moving their three highest-paid position players: Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman.

“The Giants are open to offers for their three highest-paid position players — Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman — among other obvious trade candidates, like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray,” posted Olney on Tuesday.

The Mariners could likely use all three players. Arraez wouldn’t hold much value to the M’s due to his limited defensive capabilities. Ray wouldn’t make the starting rotation any better than it currently is, either. Adames could replace veteran J.P. Crawford in the lineup, but his play might not be worth the upgrade in salary. However, Devers and Chapman would be an intriguing combination. Should San Francisco consider trading Devers just a year after his acquisition from the Boston Red Sox? Well, if Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto decides to part with an arm like righty Bryce Miller as the headliner, then the Giants would definitely listen.

Bryce Miller would be a ready-made addition to the Giants’ rotation

At the moment, the Mariners have six viable starters for the usual five rotation slots. Miller is joined by veteran Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock, and Logan Gilbert in Seattle’s current rotation. Logan Evans figures to return to the big-league club from injury at some point. Not to mention the fact that the M’s have two of baseball’s best pitching prospects currently in Double-A: Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan. It wouldn’t be surprising to see one, if not both, hurlers make their major league debut this year.

Since returning from the IL, Miller has been excellent. The 27-year-old is 3-2 with a 1.97 ERA and 1.9 WAR over seven starts. Miller has rebounded from a rough 2025 campaign, looking like the pitcher who had a breakout 2024 with a 12-8 record and 3.4 WAR over 31 starts. Injuries last year were a big contributor to his down 2025. However, since returning from a left oblique injury, Miller has been superb.

Yet, with the amount of depth the Mariners have in their system, the team could move Miller, plus another one of the arms listed above, in a deal for Devers. However, it’s more likely that Seattle would deal a couple of other young players/prospects in a deal for Devers, in addition to Miller. Outfielders Lazaro Montes, Yorger Bautista, and Jonny Farmelo would likely be of interest to the Giants, plus versatile young infielder Ryan Bliss, as well as rising shortstop prospect Felnin Celesten. Relief help could also be in the cards.

To bring Devers to the Pacific Northwest, starting a package with Miller, Farmelo, and Bliss would likely be a good start. Adding a reliever like the injured Matt Brash, or a veteran such as Gabe Speier, would also likely interest the Giants. Let’s say the last piece is Brash, as he could potentially transition back to starting. Would a package featuring those four players get the job done, especially if Seattle takes on the entirety of Devers’ massive deal? If so, the Mariners could repeat as AL West champions later this fall.
