The Miami Marlins will be without one of their promising young starting pitchers for a while.

On Friday, the team placed right-hander Eury Perez on the 15-day injured list with a right gracilis strain.

According to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola, the recovery time for this injury is eight weeks.

Right-handed pitcher Josh Ekness has been recalled to take Perez's spot on the roster. Leo Jimenez is also back from his concussion and Graham Pauley was sent back to Triple-A.

Perez, 23, was removed from his last start after four innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, May 27. Perez injured himself while stretching in the dugout in between innings. The Marlins were initially calling it hamstring spasms.

Unfortunately, the Marlins received discouraging news and now Perez is expected to miss the next two months.

The Marlins already suffered a big blow to their starting rotation when it was discovered that Robby Snelling would require Tommy John surgery.

Now, they will be without Perez for the foreseeable future.

Perez has posted a 3-6 record, 4.60 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 62.2 innings and 12 starts this season. He made 20 starts last year, going 7-6 with a 4.25 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 105 strikeouts in 95.1 innings.

The former top prospect is being counted on as a future cornerstone piece in the Marlins' rotation for many years to come. Perez has an 100 mph fastball and devastating changeup.

The Marlins will hope that Perez doesn't have to miss longer than the two month injury timeline.

Miami has a record of 26-31 record and are in fourth place in the National League East division. They're likely another few years away from contending for a playoff spot and the injury to Perez is the latest reason as to why.
