Marlins To Claim Cameron Weston

The Marlins claimed righty Cameron Weston off waivers from the division-rival Mets, reports Will Sammon of The Athletic. New York had claimed Weston off waivers from the Orioles in early September. He spent the remainder of the season with the Mets’ top affiliate in Syracuse but didn’t pitch in a big league game as a Met.

Weston, whom the Orioles drafted in the eighth round in 2022, developed into a notable prospect with the organization. Both Baseball America (No. 13) and FanGraphs (14th) regarded him as one of the Orioles’ 15 best farmhands at the outset of the 2025 season. At that point, he owned a 3.09 ERA with a 28.3% strikeout rate and 7.2% walk rate in the minors. Weston ascended to the Triple-A level for the first time that year, but he posted a 4.59 ERA with far less impressive walk and strikeout numbers (22.0% and 11.7%, respectively) in 135 1/3 innings.

This past season went even worse for the 26-year-old Weston, who struggled to a 7.89 ERA with an 11.9% walk rate over 51 2/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk. Weston made his major league debut with a scoreless inning against the Blue Jays on May 28, but that counts as his lone MLB appearance thus far. The Orioles cut him from their 40-man roster on Sept. 1. To Weston’s credit, he ended 2026 on a high note after the Mets claimed him. In 6 1/3 frames with Triple-A Syracuse, he gave up just one run on two hits and recorded 10 strikeouts against one walk.

While the Mets didn’t think Weston was worthy of a 40-man roster spot despite his strong finish to the year, the Marlins will give him one for now. Weston still has two minor league options left, giving the Marlins the flexibility to send him down if he sticks with the organization.
